FAQ - Katie Hickenbottom Photography

Hey there! I know you have lots of questions, so I'll try to answer some of them in this little FAQ section! If I didn't answer your questions here, feel free to shoot me a message!

How much do you charge?

I offer a few different types of sessions. Message me for pricing information.

What's included in the price?

The cost includes the photo shoot, edited hi-res images uploaded to a private online gallery, and the ability to download the images at no extra cost. I will re-edit images upon request.

Do you have an indoor location?

I do not. I shoot outside at different parks in the Portland area. There are studios available for rent, which would add additional cost to your session.

Do you offer discounts?

I do not.

Do you bring props?

I have some props and I will bring them upon request. However, since I shoot outdoors, I like to use natures props - think rocks and logs. I will also bring a neutral blanket to sit on. You are welcome to bring your own props to the session.

Do you offer newborn sessions?

I love new babies and I love to photograph them. When it comes to taking photos of them I am more of a lifestyle newborn photographer, meaning I don't bring a lot of props or place them in complicated poses. I like to take natural photos of them - you know, babies just being babies. These sessions can take anywhere from 2 to 3 hours (or more) depending on all sorts of different circumstances - like feeding and changing and siblings. If you want more information on newborn sessions please contact me!

Can you send me all of the images unedited? Can I get the RAW image files?

I do not give out the unedited images or the RAW image files.

Can we meet before the shoot to discuss ideas?

Yes! We can meet for coffee or go to a park. This would be a great way to get to know each other, talk about expectations and have the kids get a little more familiar with me!

Can we change outfits?

If you have booked a full session, of course! I love wardrobe changes - the outfits you wear can totally change the tone of the shoot.

If you have booked a mini session with me, time is limited so there really isn't an opportunity to change clothes.

What should I wear?

Think about what you want your photos to look like. Do you want them to have a soft look? If so pick neutral, light colors. Want a more modern, urban feel? Pick a few bold and bright statement pieces. Think colored pants, bright scarves, shirts with a graphic on them. If you want your pictures to look more formal you can wear dresses, ties, heels, blazers and slacks.

If you've booked a family session I suggest mom pick out her outfit first - find something that makes you feel amazing! If you don't already own something like that go shopping (without the kids) or borrow something from a friend. Then choose outfits for the rest of the family based on what you're wearing. Try to avoid busy prints and being too matchy-matchy.

You can find great examples of what to wear if you look through the pictures on my website :) Pinterest is also a wonderful resource on getting ideas for what to wear.

Make-up! I love the stuff - can't live without it. Moms, I know that when you're getting ready for your shoot you'll want to try to cover every flaw - DON'T! Why you ask? Well, I have this magical tool called Photoshop and I can get rid of any blemish or wrinkle you don't like! So, apply your make-up like you would for any other day - you can add a little extra blush, a little powder to reduce shine, maybe some eye shadow (avoid yellow tones, go light on the mascara and eye liner (unless your going for big drama, then forget the most of what I just said). If you don't wear lipstick - wear some just for today and bring it with you.

You are beautiful! So lets let that natural beauty shine through!

Do I need to bring anything to the shoot?

Bring whatever you need to look your best - a brush, make-up, hair spray, tissues. Put the finishing touches on in the car and leave it all there. Leave your purse in the car too :)

A little note for the moms and dads...As a mom of two little kids, I know how frustrating it is when your kids don't want to cooperate. Your kids usually ham it up in front of the camera when you're taking their photos, but when they see me, a stranger, with a big camera asking them to smile they suddenly shut down. This is totally normal and I totally get it! I will have an abundance of patience with your children and I will try my best to make them laugh and get them comfortable with me. If the kids don't want to smile or sit still for a photo, lets move on, let them play a bit - we have time! Just take a deep breath :)  I want you and your family to have a great time with me! Photo shoots can be really fun! I don't mind letting the kids touch my camera - even snap a few photos if they want. They can touch the props if they want to. Unless they are putting themselves in danger, it's best to let them be free for a little while. Sometimes the candid shots are the best shots! Once they are happy we can rein them in and get some really great family photos because everyone will be happy!

What's your cancellation policy?

Stuff happens and I totally get that! If you need to cancel or reschedule your shoot for any reason please give me at least 2 hours notice. I do not charge a cancellation fee. If it's a mini session you are cancelling I do need at least 24 hours notice so I can open up the spot to someone else. I have the right to cancel photo sessions at any time due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances.

Can I bring my dog?

Sure, but only if it's a nice dog :)
