FAQ - Katie Hickenbottom Photography
  • FAQ

Hey there! I know you have lots of questions, so I'll try to answer some of them in this little FAQ section! If I didn't answer your questions here, feel free to shoot me a message!

How much do you charge?

Sessions start at $200. Please see my "investment" page for more info.

What's included in the price?

The cost includes the photo shoot, edited hi-res images uploaded to a private online gallery, and the ability to download the images at no extra cost.

Can you send me all of the images unedited? Can I get the RAW image files?

I do not give out the unedited images or the RAW image files. When I get home after our shoot I am so excited to look at the photos we've taken! Seriously, like, really excited. I try super hard to select all of the best images from your shoot. So know that you are getting the best of the best. Sometimes there are pictures that are not so great that I won't edit, but maybe they are funny or I think you'll appreciate them, so I'll include those too. And, of course if there is a picture that we took that I did not send to you and you're like "what about that one picture we took where I was doing this" I'll send it to you. But I won't send every single unedited picture and I will not send the RAW image files.

Can we meet before the shoot to discuss ideas?

Can we change outfits?

Of course! I love wardrobe changes because the outfits you wear can totally change the tone of the shoot.

What should I wear?

Think about what you want your photos to look like. Do you want them to have a soft look? If so pick neutral, light colors. Do you want your pictures to look more formal? For girls, beautiful dresses always make for beautiful photos. Dress the boys in blazers and slacks. Want a more modern, urban feel? Pick a few bold and bright statement pieces. Think colored pants, bright scarves, shirts with a graphic on them.

If you've booked a family session I suggest mom pick out her outfit first - find something that makes you feel amazing! If you don't already own something like that go shopping (without the kids) or borrow something from a friend. Then choose outfits for the rest of the family based on what you're wearing. Try to avoid a lot of busy prints and try to avoid being too matchy-matchy. For example don't dress everyone in the same colored jeans :)

You can find great examples of what to wear if you look through the pictures on my website :) Pinterest is also a wonderful resource on getting ideas for what to wear.

Make-up! I love the stuff - can't live without it. I know that when you're getting ready for your shoot you'll want to try to cover every flaw - DON'T! Why you ask? Well, I have this magical tool called Photoshop and I can get rid of any blemish or wrinkle you don't like! So, apply your make-up like you would for any other day - you can add a little extra blush, a little powder to reduce shine, maybe some eye shadow (avoid yellow tones, go light on the mascara and eye liner (unless your going for big drama, then forget the most of what I just said). If you don't wear lipstick - wear some just for today and bring it with you.

You are beautiful! So lets let that natural beauty shine through!

Do I need to bring anything to the shoot?

Bring whatever you need to look your best - a brush, make-up, hair spray, tissues. Put the finishing touches on in the car and leave it all there. Leave your purse in the car too :)

What should I do to prepare for my newborn session?

Having a new little one in the house is so awesome, but I know it can be stressful! I also know new mommies aren't always feeling so great about how they look. Let me tell you something - you look amazing ! And you just had a baby which is also amazing! So...please don't clean the house for me! Feel free to feed your baby at any time, or take a snack break, or take a shower, whatever you need to do. Also, don't worry if baby has an accident on my props - it's going to happen and it washes out :)

To prepare for these sessions you'll want to diaper your baby loosely about an hour before I get to your house. If you can, feed your baby a few minutes before I arrive so they are nice and sleepy for the photos. Outfit changes can sometimes make the baby grumpy, so we can save those for the end. If there is a spot in your house with great natural light get your husband to clear a space and we can set up there. Turn the heat up - babies like to be nice and warm. If you have little ones, prepare them for what is going to be going on. It's pretty likely they won't want to cooperate, so we'll try to make it fun for them! We want them to be happy too! I suggest feeding them too before I get there and that we are scheduled a good bit before or after a nap. Full and well rested kids are the happiest kids! lol Candy also helps :)

Do you have props? Can I bring props?

Yes and yes! I have chairs, benches, boxes, signs, blankets...and if I don't have it I can try to find it :) You are also welcome to bring anything you want to use in your photos.

What's your cancellation policy?

Stuff happens and I totally get that! If you need to cancel or reschedule your shoot for any reason please give me at least 2 hours notice. I do not charge a cancellation fee. If it's a mini session you are cancelling I do need at least 24 hours notice so I can open up the spot to someone else.

Can I bring my dog?

Sure, but only if it's a nice dog :)

A little note for the moms and dads...

As a mom, I know how frustrating it is when your kids don't want to cooperate. Your kids usually ham it up in front of the camera when you're taking their photos, but when they see me, a stranger, with a big camera asking them to smile they suddenly shut down. This is totally normal and I totally get it! I will have an abundance of patience with your children and I will try my best to make them laugh and get them comfortable with me. If the kids don't want to smile or sit still for a photo, lets move on, let them play a bit - we have time! Just take a deep breath :)  I want you and your family to have a great time with me! Photo shoots can be really fun! I don't mind letting the kids touch my camera - even snap a few photos if they want. They can touch the props if they want to. Unless they are putting themselves in danger, it's best to let them be free for a little while. Sometimes the candid shots are the best shots! Once they are happy we can rein them in and get some really great family photos because everyone will be happy!
